Synthetic Biology

The Synthetic Biology Research Program

Synthetic biology is the design and construction of novel, artificial biological pathways, organisms or devices, and the redesign of existing natural biological systems for purposeful function. The Synthetic Biology Research Program in the Department of Biochemistry is closely aligned with the NUS Synthetic Biology for Clinical and Technological Innovation (SynCTI) and aims to lead the way in chemical- and cell-based therapeutics development in the treatment of human diseases and solving grand challenges in society. Leveraging on the highly interdisciplinary research expertise of members in this program, as well as the excellent research platforms and capabilities in Synthetic Biology developed through funding from local and international organizations, we will strive to become a leading program in biological design for purposeful function, creating value for Singapore in the areas of healthcare, energy, urban sustainability and the environment.
